Version 2 Technical Support Information

Windows XP Users (CSText32 error): Some people have reported a problem when installing referring to Cstext32.ocx and/or Cscmd32.ocx not registering properly. This will prevent the program from running properly.

  • To correct this problem, click here to download a patch file.
  • Run the file.
  • Click Run to allow the program to continue even though it is unsigned.
  • Make sure that the files extract to the C:\Windows\System32 folder. (If your Windows is actually in a different folder, such as WinNT, edit the statement to reflect the correct folder.)
  • Then click on Start – Run and type “C:\Windows\System32\SP2Fix.bat”. (If your Windows is actually in a different folder, such as WinNT, edit the statement to reflect the correct folder.)
  • Click on OK. You should receive a series of messages whose last word will be “succeeded”. Click OK on each one.

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8 Users (Blank dialog boxes):

Some people have reported that dialog boxes in our program have check boxes with no text attached! The issue has to do with Buffer Overflow protection on McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8, which has been left unpatched or has a patch number of less than Patch 10.

McAfee reports that there are two fixes:

  • Download and install Patch 10 for VirusScan Enterprise 8 from mysupport.nai.com. Then reboot. (You will need your company’s Network Associates [McAfee] Grant Number to register on their site, if you haven’t already done so.)
  • Or, right-click on the McAfee shield in the Task Bar, choose VirusScan Console. Then right click on Buffer Overflow and disable it.

3. I have Windows ME and am getting an “Unknown error” referring to licensing information. What’s going on and how do I fix it? You need a patch file to allow our licensing process to work with Windows ME. Click here to download the file. Save the patch file into your Twtk20 folder. Run the file and allow it to replace anything it wants to replace.

4. I can't print or preview documents. Why? You probably installed the ToolKit in a different folder than the default or you have installed a program, such as Microsoft Access or Microsoft Project, which has changed some settings in your system. If so, you have two changes to make:

  • Click on Start - Settings - Control Panel and open the ODBC 32 Bit Data Source item. Double click on MS Access 97 Database. The setting entitled "Database:" should refer to the location in which you installed the ToolKit.
  • If it doesn't, click on Select and navigate to the drive and folder in which you installed the program. On the left side, select the Mbti32.mdb file and click on OK until you get back to the Control Panel. Close the Control Panel. (This is the only step to take if you installed the ToolKit in the default folder.) In the ToolKit, click on File - Program Defaults. Make sure that the Data Path setting refers to the drive and folder in which you installed the ToolKit. Click on OK.
  • You should now be able to print and preview.

5. When I add data, it looks like a person has been saved, but then they do not appear in reports or in the group when I go back to add more data. What happened and how do I make sure that my data gets saved? When you click on Save after entering an individual’s data, their last name should appear in the long gray bar above the Edit button. If it does not, then the data has not been properly saved.

Thus far, the only scenario under which we have observed this happening is when the user attempts to alter the “Take Date” or the “Birth Date” fields. Under certain circumstances, particularly when the format they use is not the same as their “Regional Settings” in the Control Panel, the data will not be saved.

Our suggestion if this happens to you is simply to stop changing the date fields. The Birth Date is not used at all within the ToolKit. The Take Date only appears as “Date” on the Report Form, and we have found that the date you entered the data is almost always acceptable. You will know that you were successful adding data if, after entering the information and hitting “Save”, the person’s last name shows up in the gray bar above the “Edit” button. If not, click on “Exit”, go back into Data Entry and try again.

6. I can’t print or preview any of the Introductory Handouts. You either did not install the PowerPoint Viewer when prompted to do so during installation or you installed it into a folder other than the default. If you didn’t install it at all, click on Start - Run - Browse. Navigate to your Twtk20 folder. Double click on Ppview97.exe. Click on OK. Follow all prompts. You do not have to restart your computer when prompted to do so. If you installed the Viewer to a non-default folder, in the ToolKit, click on File - Program Defaults. Edit the PowerPoint Viewer line to reflect where you did install it.

7. I can’t read the Users’ Manual in the Help menu. You either did not install the Word Viewer when prompted to do so during installation or you installed it into a folder other than the default. If you didn’t install it at all, click on Start - Run - Browse. Navigate to your Twtk20 folder. Double click on wd97vwr32.exe. Click on OK. Follow all prompts. You do not have to restart your computer when prompted to do so. If you installed the Viewer to a non-default folder, in the ToolKit, click on File - Program Defaults. Edit the Word Viewer line to reflect where you did install it.

8. I tried to get into the program today, after successfully running it in the past. I got sent immediately to the Registration screen. Why did it happen and what do I do about it? One of two things happened:
a. It is possible that you inadvertently pressed ENTER when the “Press ENTER to configure your license” screen came up as the program was loading. If so, just exit out of the Registration screen and run the program.
b. More likely, you ran (or your computer ran) a disk defragmentatio n program, other than the one provided with Windows. For example, many people have the Norton Utilities package and have it set to run “Speed Disk” at regular intervals. Some people have network support folks who come by periodically and run such programs. If this is the case, you need to click on “Display Site Code” and then “Yes” to display the Site Code. Then e-mail sitekeys@typetalk.com or call OKA at 703-591-6284 with your new Site Code and you will get a new Site Key. If you want to run a disk defragmentation program in the future, either use the Microsoft product (Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter) or follow the steps in the next Question below.

9. What do I do if I want to run the Norton Speed Disk program or other non-Microsoft disk defragmentation program? Within the disk defragmentation program, specify that *.ENT, *.KEY, *41s, and *.RST files be unmovable. Make sure you save your changes so that they hold for all future uses of the program.

10. The Report Form doesn’t come out right. The box is too big (or small) and the words don’t all fit in the right places. You probably have one of the newer laser or inkjet printers. If so, add a new printer definition using the HP LaserJet III or an inkjet printer, which is compatible with yours (check the owner’s manual for the printer for a list of compatible, or emulated, printers). Set this printer to use the same port your physical printer uses and set it as the default. This should fix your problem.

11. Does the ToolKit run under Windows NT, XP, or 2000? Yes, it does, but it is not designed to be a shared application and must be installed on a local hard drive.

12. Did you ever notice that the Temperament Profiles don’t paginate properly? I’d like them to do so! OK! Click here to download a replacement set of reports. Save the file in your Twtk20 folder and then run the file (double click on it) to replace the existing problematic report files.

13. I am getting a message about the “Jet VBA” not being able to find something and/or errors referring to the "Jet Database Engine". What should I do? Click on Start - Run - Browse. Navigate to the Twtk20 folder. Open and run the file called “Mdac_typ.exe”. Follow all prompts.

14. I just copied the audio files to my hard drive and now I get a message about “Input past end of file” when I run the program. What gives? This is a known bug and we offer our apologies (as well as a solution). Click here to download a small correction file to your Twtk20 folder, which will replace the existing file. Then go into the program, click on File - Program Defaults, and make sure that your defaults are set up the way you like them.

15. I am getting data entry errors. Why? Sometimes a blank entry gets accidentally added to the data file. You can remedy this by going to the File menu and choosing Advanced Data Editing. Look at the listing. The only blank row should be the one at the bottom of the list, with the asterisk in the left margin. If there is a blank, or mostly blank line anywhere else in the listing, click on the gray box in the left margin of that row to highlight the row. Press the Delete key on your keyboard and click on "Yes" to confirm the deletion.

16. I need to reinstall the ToolKit. How do I protect the data I have already entered into the ToolKit? Beginning with Version 2, The TypeWatching ToolKit will not overwrite an existing data file, so your data will be safe, so long as you do not delete the data file or the folder it lives in (Twtk20). Of course, it is always a good idea to make backups of your data. The only files you need to backup are Mbti32.mdb and Twtk32.cfg. These are your data file and your configuration file and are the only ones you change when you use the program.
